How do I work out 20% off plus another 10%?

One after the other. Take 20 percent off the full price, put that result in as the new price, then take 10 percent off it. It is not the same as 30 percent off.

I know both prices. What percent off is that?

Switch to the mode that works backwards, enter the original price and the price you paid, and the percent off appears.

Does it add sales tax?

No. It stops at the discounted price. Tax is worked out on that figure separately, at whatever rate applies where you are.

What about a fixed amount off, like 5 off?

That is subtraction, not a percentage, so this panel does not cover it. Take the amount off the price yourself.

Background

Reading a percent off honestly

Type the full price and the percent off. The price you pay and the money saved appear together. A second mode goes the other way, from two prices to the percent.

  • The sale price and the amount saved are the same sum read two ways, so both are shown at once.
  • Two percentages taken in turn never add up to their sum, because the second one works on a smaller price.
  • A percent off a price with tax already in it saves you more in cash than the same percent before tax.
  • The currency does not matter. The arithmetic is on the numbers, and the answer comes back in the same units.
