Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a double discount, like 20% off plus an extra 10%?
Apply discounts one after the other. First, calculate the 20% discount. Then, apply the 10% discount to that new sale price. Note that this is not the same as a single 30% discount on the original price.
Can this calculator add sales tax?
No, this tool is designed only to calculate the price after a discount has been applied. Any sales tax would need to be calculated separately based on the final discounted price.
How can I find the percentage if I know the original and final price?
This tool includes a mode for that calculation. Switch to the 'Find Percentage' tab, enter the original price and the price you paid, and the tool will show you the exact discount percentage you received.
Does the calculator work with any currency?
Yes. The tool performs mathematical calculations on the numbers you enter, so it is independent of any specific currency. The results for "Final Price" and "Amount Saved" will be in the same currency unit as the price you entered.
What if the discount is a fixed amount, not a percentage?
This calculator is specifically for percentage-based discounts. If you have a fixed-amount coupon (e.g., $5 off), you would use a standard calculator to subtract that amount from the original price.
Calculating Multiple Discounts
Enter an original price and a discount percentage to find the final sale price and the amount you save. You can also work in reverse to find the discount percentage.
- To calculate a 'double discount,' you must apply them one after the other. A 20% discount plus an extra 10% is not a 30% discount.
- First, calculate the 20% off the original price. Then, take that new sale price and apply the 10% discount to it to find the final price.
