How do I take tax out of a total?

Set the direction to already includes tax. The panel divides rather than multiplies, and shows the price before tax.

Why not just take the percentage off the total?

Because tax was added to the smaller figure. Taking five percent off a total gives a different answer from adding five percent to the price.

Which rate should I use?

The one that applies where the sale happens. Rates differ by country, state and sometimes by the kind of goods.

Does it handle VAT and GST?

Yes. They work the same way arithmetically. Enter the rate and choose the direction you need.

Getting the direction right

Enter the amount and the rate, then say whether that amount already includes the tax. The tax, the price before it and the total are all shown at once.

  • A price that already includes tax has to be divided by one plus the rate, not reduced by the rate.
  • Adding and then removing the same percentage does not return the original figure.
  • Invoices usually show the amount before tax, the tax and the total as three separate lines.
  • Keep the rate as a percentage, not a decimal, so the figure on the page matches the one on the paperwork.
