How to write a cheque in Hong Kong

Write the amount twice: once in figures in the box, once in words (Chinese capital numerals or English — one script is enough). Whole Hong Kong dollars in Chinese often end with 正 or 整; English lines end with Only, for example Hong Kong Dollars One Hundred Thousand Only. Under Cap. 19 s.9(2), if the amount is stated in both words and figures and they disagree, the amount in words is the amount payable.

Six steps to fill in a cheque

    Date

    Write the date the cheque is drawn. A bill is not invalid by reason only that it is post-dated (Cap. 19 s.13(2); see Sources). In general bank practice a post-dated cheque can only be deposited on or after its date, and a cheque more than six months old is usually treated as out of date — subject to your bank.

    Payee

    Writing the payee’s full name — person or company — is recommended, rather than an abbreviation.

    Amount in words

    Chinese or English, immediately after 港幣 or Hong Kong Dollars with no gap that could invite alteration.

    Amount in figures

    Enter the same value in the HK$ box, for example 100,000.00.

    Signature

    Sign as the bank holds on file.

    Crossing (optional)

    Draw two parallel lines across the face, usually at the top-left, to make a general crossing (Cap. 19 s.76; see Sources). “A/C Payee Only” is commonly written between them in Hong Kong and is not the wording of s.76.

Does a Hong Kong cheque need Chinese or English?

One script in the amount-in-words line is enough. The figure box must still be filled and must agree with the words.

Should I write 正 or 整?

Both are common in Hong Kong for whole dollars. After 角 and 分, do not add 正 or 整.

How do you write one hundred thousand in English?

One Hundred Thousand — for HK$100,000: Hong Kong Dollars One Hundred Thousand Only.

How are cents written in English?

This tool prints … and Fifty-Six Cents Only for HK$1,234.56. … and Cents Fifty-Six Only is also seen; both forms appear on cheques.

What if the words and figures disagree?

Under Cap. 19 s.9(2), if words and figures disagree, the amount in words is payable. Check both against this converter before you sign.

Can I correct a wrong amount?

Avoid altering the amount line. If the figure is wrong, void the cheque and write a new one.

Why 壹拾萬 instead of 拾萬?

A leading 壹 makes it harder to inflate the amount by inserting digits at the front.

Common reasons to double-check

Type the figure once. You get the Chinese capital numerals and the English wording, with all three regional forms shown together.

  • Words and figures that do not match. Under Cap. 19 s.9(2) the words prevail, but a mismatch can cause delays or queries.
  • Ordinary numerals like 一二三 instead of capital forms. They are too easy to alter.
  • A gap between the currency name and the first character, which leaves room to insert a digit.
  • An altered amount line is harder to check than a cheque written once.
