Where do I find my car consumption?
The trip computer usually shows it, and the manual lists the official figure. Real consumption is normally a little worse than the official one.
Does it handle miles per gallon?
Yes. Switch the units to miles and gallons and enter your figure directly. Nothing needs converting first.
Is the return trip included?
Only if you tick it. The tick doubles the distance, and the fuel and cost follow from there.
Why is my real cost higher?
Town driving, traffic, a loaded car and cold weather all raise consumption above the steady figure most cars quote.
What actually moves the cost
Enter the distance, how much fuel the car uses and what you pay at the pump. Tick the return trip and the distance doubles; set the passengers and the cost divides.
- Consumption changes more with speed and traffic than most drivers expect, especially above about ninety kilometres an hour.
- A roof box or a full car raises consumption for the whole trip, not just the loaded leg.
- Pump prices vary enough along a route that filling before you leave can be worth the detour.
- Splitting fuel between passengers is easier agreed at the start than settled at the end.
