Is the tip worked out before or after tax?
On the figure you enter. Enter the pre-tax amount if you tip on that, or the full total if you tip on that.
What should I tip?
It varies by country and by service. The table shows the usual range so you can pick rather than guess.
Why round each share up?
A share is handed over in real money. Split 100 three ways and it is 33.333…, so 33.33 each puts in 99.99. Shares round up to the cent instead, and the extra is shown.
Does a service charge count as the tip?
Often yes. If the bill already includes one, set the tip to zero or top up by a small amount.
Splitting a bill without an argument
Put in the bill, slide the tip, say how many are paying. Every usual rate is shown together so you can decide fast.
- Agree whether the tip is on the pre-tax or the full amount before anybody pays.
- Rounding each share up by a small amount covers the gap and is quicker than exact change.
- Where a service charge is already added, an extra tip is a choice, not an expectation.
- One person paying and the rest transferring is faster than splitting a card six ways.
