Frequently asked questions
Can I pick a color without an image?
Not on this panel; it reads a pixel from a picture. The color converter takes typed values in HEX, RGB, HSL and CMYK instead.
Can I pick from a website or my screen?
No. Take a screenshot and open that image here. The panel reads image files you choose and nothing else on your device.
Does the image get uploaded?
No. It is decoded inside this browser tab. The picture, its name and its contents stay on your device.
Which image types can I open?
The formats your browser can decode. If a picture will not open, save a copy as PNG or JPEG and try that one.
Getting the color you meant
This picker works from a picture. Open one from your device, click the pixel you want, and the exact HEX and RGB values for it appear with a swatch.
- One click reads one pixel, so pick a point away from an edge where two colors meet.
- A photograph of one object holds many shades, so pick from the area you want to match.
- JPEG compression shifts pixels slightly; a PNG of the same artwork gives a cleaner read.
- Copy the HEX for stylesheets, and the RGB when the file you are editing asks for numbers.
