Frequently asked questions
Which images turn into good SVGs?
Logos, icons, line art and screenshots with flat color. The trace follows edges, so the clearer the edges are, the closer the result comes.
Why does my photo look wrong?
A photograph has no flat regions to follow, so the trace invents hundreds of overlapping paths. The file gets bigger and the picture gets worse.
Can I edit the SVG afterwards?
Yes. It is XML holding real paths, so any vector editor can change the colors, move points or delete a shape.
Are GIF or HEIC images accepted?
No. The panel takes PNG, JPG and WebP. Convert a HEIC photo to JPG first with the HEIC tool on this site.
Why a vector file behaves differently
Tracing reads the shapes it can see and redraws them as paths. Logos, icons and flat art come out clean. A photograph turns into hundreds of tangled paths.
- A bitmap stores pixels, so enlarging it enlarges the squares. An SVG stores paths, so it is redrawn at whatever size you ask for.
- Fewer colors mean fewer paths, and fewer paths mean a smaller file that is easier to edit by hand.
- Keeping the background traces it as a solid shape. Dropping it leaves the artwork on transparency.
- Text in a traced image becomes outlines rather than letters, so it can no longer be retyped or spell-checked.
Full specification
| Input | One PNG, JPG or WebP at a time. |
|---|---|
| Output | An SVG of traced paths, ready for vector software. |
| Colors | Between 2 and 32, set by you. Fewer colors give simpler shapes and a smaller file. |
| Detail | Three levels, small to fine, plus a switch for whether the background is traced. |
| What it will not do | Recover detail that is not in the picture. A photograph traces into a mass of paths, not a clean drawing. |
| Price | Free |
| Account required | No |
| Where it runs | In your browser tab. Nothing is sent anywhere. |
