Frequently asked questions
What DPI is my image?
On its own, none. Dots per inch only exists once a print size is chosen, which is why this asks for both.
How many pixels do I need for 300 dpi?
Three hundred for every inch. An eight by ten inch print needs 2400 by 3000 pixels.
Is DPI the same as PPI?
They are used interchangeably for this sum. Strictly, PPI describes the image and DPI describes the printer dots that reproduce it.
Can I raise the DPI of a photo?
Only by printing it smaller. Changing a number in software without adding real detail does not make the print sharper.
Why DPI needs a size
Enter your pixel width and height and the table shows the largest print at each dots per inch level. Switch direction to find the pixels a target DPI needs.
- A four thousand pixel wide image is 300 dpi at thirteen inches and 150 dpi at twenty-six.
- The dpi field saved inside a file is metadata, and printers usually ignore it in favour of the size you choose.
- Six hundred dots per inch is worth it for fine art and line work, rarely for photographs.
- Scanning is where dpi genuinely describes the capture, because it sets how many samples per inch are taken.
