Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is actually in EXIF?

The camera and lens, the exposure settings, the moment the shutter fired, often a serial number, and GPS coordinates if location was switched on.

Does stripping it hurt the picture?

No. For JPG, PNG and WebP the pixels are untouched. The one exception is a JPG that needs rotating, which is re-encoded at 92% quality.

Will my photo end up sideways?

No. When a JPG relies on the orientation flag, the rotation is applied to the pixels before the flag goes, so it displays upright everywhere.

Do I still need this if I post to social sites?

For a public post, often not. Photos sent by email, sent as documents in chat apps, listed on a marketplace or put on a personal site usually keep the whole block.

Background

Where a stray tag shows up

The tags are cut out of the file; the picture itself is not re-encoded, so quality and dimensions come back identical. Each file lists what it lost.

  • Coordinates written by a phone are accurate enough to point at a room, not a neighborhood.
  • A camera serial number ties every photo you have ever posted back to the same body.
  • Screenshots never had EXIF, so a file that reports nothing removed is normal.
  • Cleaning before you share is the one step that does not depend on where the photo ends up.
