Frequently asked questions
What information does EXIF contain?
EXIF data often includes GPS location, date, time, and camera model. It can also include the device serial number, lens, and exposure settings. This information can reveal personal details like where you live and what equipment you own.
Does removing EXIF change the image quality?
No. For JPG, PNG and WebP, metadata is removed without changing the image data. The pixels are identical. The only exception is JPGs needing rotation, which are re-encoded at 92% quality to ensure they display correctly.
What happens to photos that rely on the rotation flag?
Some phones save images sideways and use an EXIF flag to orient them. This tool applies that rotation to the image pixels before removing the flag, so the photo displays correctly without its metadata.
Do social networks already strip EXIF?
Some do for public posts, but photos sent by email, messaging apps in document mode, cloud links, marketplaces and personal websites often keep everything. Cleaning the file before you share it is the simple way to be certain.
Are my photos sent anywhere?
No. Your files are processed in your browser and are never sent to a server. The metadata is removed on your device, and the cleaned photo is ready to download. The image never leaves your computer.
What a single photo can reveal
Metadata is cut out of the file byte by byte; the image data itself is never re-encoded, so quality and dimensions are exactly what they were. Each file lists what was removed.
