Can I control the black and white conversion?

Not the mix — it uses true luminance weighting, with no contrast, brightness or channel controls. The one setting is the output quality slider.

Does this reduce the file size?

It can. Removing color data can sometimes result in a smaller file, especially for formats like PNG, but this is not guaranteed for all images.

What happens if I use a transparent PNG?

Transparency is preserved. Only the color pixels are converted to grayscale, while transparent areas of the image remain transparent.

How many images can I add at once?

There is no fixed limit. Past about 500 MB the page warns you before it starts. Files with the same name get a number added inside the ZIP. Older browsers are told plainly that they cannot run this.

How Grayscale Conversion Works

This tool converts each color pixel to a shade of gray using a standard luminance formula. Any transparency in the original image is retained.

  • Grayscale conversion calculates the perceived brightness (luminance) of each pixel. Different colors contribute differently; green appears brighter to the eye than blue.
  • This tool weights the red, green, and blue values of each pixel. This creates a more natural black and white image.
