Frequently asked questions

When should I choose PNG instead of JPG?

Choose PNG for images to be edited again, or for graphics with text and sharp edges. It is a lossless format. Choose JPG for sharing photos, where smaller file size is more important than a perfect copy.

Will the PNG be larger than the original HEIC?

Yes, often 3 to 6 times larger. HEIC is a lossy format; PNG is lossless. A 2 MB HEIC can become an 8–12 MB PNG. For smaller files, convert to JPG or compress the PNG afterwards.

Is there a size or batch limit?

No. Files of any size, in any number — the practical limit is your device’s memory: PNGs are large, so on a phone it is sensible to work in batches of a few dozen and download as you go.

Does the PNG keep transparency?

Photos from a camera have no transparent areas, so the PNG is fully opaque. If the HEIC contains an alpha channel — for example an exported graphic — that transparency is preserved in the PNG.

Are my files sent anywhere?

No. When you upload a file here, it is opened and processed in your browser and never sent to us. Decoding and encoding both happen on your device, so there is nothing to wait for and nothing stored anywhere.

PNG versus JPG for iPhone photos

PNG is the right choice when the image will be edited again, placed in a document, or needs to keep sharp edges and flat colour exactly. Each file is decoded and written in your browser; nothing touches a server.

  • A HEIC photo is already lossy. Converting to PNG does not restore lost detail, but guarantees no further detail is lost during conversion.
  • For sharing, JPG at 90% quality is visually identical to PNG and much smaller. Use PNG for work-in-progress graphics, JPG for finished photos.
