How to use AI to PNG
- 1
Add the AI file
It is read here first, and says plainly if the file cannot be opened.
- 2
Pick the resolution
96 dpi is enough for a web page; 288 or 400 is for something that gets printed. PNG is already selected.
- 3
Download
One artboard comes back as a PNG. Several come back as a ZIP of PNGs, numbered in order.
Frequently asked questions
Does the PNG have a transparent background?
No. The artboard is drawn as a page, so anywhere with no artwork comes out white rather than clear. If you need a cut-out, the artwork has to leave Illustrator as a PNG from the Export dialog, or be cropped afterwards.
Which resolution should I pick?
96 dpi matches a screen pixel for pixel. 144 or 200 covers a retina display. 288 and 400 are for print or for scaling up, and files grow fast — a full artboard at 400 dpi can run to tens of megabytes.
Can I change the resolution after saving?
Not without converting again. PNG holds pixels, not shapes, so enlarging one afterwards makes it blurry. Convert again at the higher setting instead — it costs nothing and takes seconds.
Why did I get a ZIP instead of a PNG?
Because the file had more than one artboard, and each one becomes its own PNG. Name a single artboard in the artboards box to get one file back.
Is PNG better than JPG here?
For logos, icons, diagrams and anything with type or flat colour, yes — PNG keeps edges hard and throws nothing away. For artwork that is mostly photographs or wide gradients, JPG will be several times smaller at a quality nobody will notice.
How do I convert an AI file to PNG without Illustrator?
Drop the .ai file here, pick a resolution and save. Illustrator stores a full PDF inside the .ai file by default, and that is what gets read — the same reason Preview can already show an .ai file.
What happens if I switch to another tab while it works?
The work pauses and picks up where it left off when you come back. Browsers throttle hidden tabs, so a job left running in the background would slow to a crawl or stall outright.
Picking a resolution you will not regret
PNG redraws the artwork as pixels, so the resolution you pick is the resolution you keep. Lines and lettering stay hard-edged at every size.
- Resolution is decided the moment you convert. A PNG has no shapes left to redraw, so the number you pick is the one you keep.
- For a web page, 96 dpi at the artboard’s own size is exactly right and keeps the file small enough to load.
- For anything going to print, 288 dpi is the usual floor and 400 is the ceiling here. Below that, type starts to look soft on paper.
- If you are unsure, convert twice. It runs on your own machine, so a second pass at a higher setting costs nothing but a few seconds.
Full specification
| What comes out | A PNG for each artboard. One artboard is a single file; more than one is a ZIP. |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 96, 144, 200, 288 or 400 dpi, and 200 to begin with. The artwork is redrawn at that size, so it is fixed once saved. |
| Compression | PNG is lossless. Saving it twice at the same resolution gives identical pixels. |
| Background | White, not clear. The artboard is drawn the way a page is drawn, so an empty corner comes out white. |
| Choosing artboards | Leave the box empty for all of them, or name them — 1-3 takes the first three. |
| File names | The name of the .ai file, then the artboard number. The ZIP keeps that order. |
| Input formats | AI files saved with Create PDF Compatible File ticked, which is Illustrator’s default. Plain PDFs work too. |
| What will not open | AI saved with that box unticked, and older PostScript-based AI. Nothing in a browser can read those. |
| Color | Drawn in RGB. Artwork set up in CMYK for print will shift on screen. |
| Price | Free. Supported by clearly labeled ads placed outside the working area. |
| Account required | No. |
| Where it runs | In your browser tab. The file is never sent anywhere. |
