Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPhone make HEIC files at all?
HEIC holds the same photo in about half the space of a JPG. To have the camera write JPG from now on, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and pick Most Compatible.
Can this convert HEIC to PNG?
Not on this page; the output here is JPG. HEIC to PNG is a separate page running the same panel with PNG as the output.
Does the conversion lose anything?
JPG is lossy. At the default 92% the difference is not visible on a screen or in print. 100% keeps the most, and lower numbers trade detail for size.
Why did one file fail in Chrome but open in Safari?
Safari reads HEIC itself. Other browsers use a small decoder on this page, and it does not yet handle burst sequences or some 10-bit HEIF files.
Why the format changed, and why JPG is still the safe one
This panel writes JPG, at a quality you choose. If you need PNG instead, HEIC to PNG is the page for that. Drop in a whole camera roll and take the results as one ZIP.
- HEIC stores a picture with the HEVC codec, which packs more detail into fewer bytes than JPG manages.
- One HEIC file can also hold 16-bit color, a Live Photo and a depth map, which a JPG has no way to carry.
- Support outside Apple's devices is patchy, so a HEIC sent to a colleague often arrives as a file nothing will open.
- JPG is read by almost every device and program in use, which is what makes it the format to send.
Full specification
| Input formats | HEIC and HEIF from iPhone, iPad and recent Android cameras. JPG, PNG and WebP are read as well. |
|---|---|
| Output format | JPG only, with a quality slider from 40% to 100%. PNG output lives on the HEIC to PNG page. |
| Batch limit | None. Add as many files as your device can hold in one go. |
| Orientation and metadata | Camera EXIF (GPS, date, model) is not copied into the JPG. The orientation flag is applied so photos stand the right way up. |
| When a file fails | Burst sequences and some 10-bit HEIF variants are not decoded. Those files are named, and the rest still download. |
| Price | Free. Supported by clearly labelled ads placed outside the working area. |
| Sign-up required | No. No account, no email, no install. |
| Where processing happens | In your browser tab, on your device. No server ever receives the file. |
