Frequently asked questions

Is JPEG different from JPG?

No. JPEG is the name of the format, and JPG is the extension left over from systems that allowed only three letters. Files saved here end in .jpg.

Will the JPEG look worse than the HEIC?

JPEG discards some detail by design. At 92% that loss is not visible on a screen or in print. Push the slider to 100% to keep the most.

How many photos can go in at once?

As many as your device has memory for. A few hundred is ordinary on a phone and far more on a laptop, because the work is done by your own browser.

Does anything about the photo leave the device?

No. The HEIC is read and the JPEG is written inside this tab. Nothing is sent, nothing is stored, and it keeps working with the network switched off.

Background

Two names, one file format

JPEG and JPG name the same format; the files here are saved with the .jpg extension, which is what most software expects. Set a quality, then take the results one at a time or as a ZIP.

  • JPEG is the name of the group that published the format; JPG is what that name became on systems limited to three-letter extensions.
  • Both spellings open in the same software. Renaming a file from .jpeg to .jpg changes nothing inside it.
  • HEIC came later and packs a photo tighter, but it is read reliably only inside Apple's own devices.
  • Sending JPEG is the safe choice when you do not know what the person on the other end is using.
