Frequently asked questions
How do I keep the picture from stretching?
Fill in one number and leave the other blank; the second is worked out for you. If you fill in both, keep proportions ticked. Unticking it stretches the picture into the frame you typed.
What width should I use for a website?
1920px covers a full-width banner and 1280px suits an article. An Instagram post is 1080px wide, and a profile picture rarely needs more than 800px. Bigger is not sharper on screen.
Can I make a small picture bigger?
Up to 200%, or any pixel number you type. Enlarging has to invent the pixels it does not have, so the result is softer than the original. Going down always looks clean.
Does anything leave my device?
No. The file is read and redrawn by your own browser using its graphics pipeline. Nothing is sent, nothing is stored, and the page carries on working if the connection drops.
Pixels and bytes are two different problems
Type a width and leave the height blank to keep the shape, or type both for a fixed frame. Percent mode scales from 5% to 200%. Each file shows old and new dimensions.
- Resizing changes how many pixels there are. Compression changes what each pixel costs. Fixing the pixel count first is usually the larger saving.
- A 12-megapixel photo carries about four times the pixels a 1920px-wide screen can show. The rest is downloaded and thrown away.
- Running a folder through one width makes a gallery line up, so listings and product grids stop needing manual cropping.
- Downsizing cannot be undone once the file is saved, so keep the original if the picture may be needed larger later.
