Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can this clean a PDF?

No. This panel opens image files. The compress PDF tool here rewrites a PDF and drops its metadata, which is the nearest thing on the site.

Is anything left in the file afterwards?

The color profile, which describes how colors should display and says nothing about you. Everything else listed is gone, and each file shows what it lost.

Does the image get worse?

No. For JPG, PNG and WebP the blocks are cut out and the pixels are left alone. Only a JPG that needs rotating is re-encoded, at 92%.

Why does one file report nothing removed?

It had nothing to remove. Screenshots, and images that have already been through a platform, usually arrive with the whole block gone.

Background

What sits alongside the picture

This panel cleans image files: JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC. It does not open PDFs or office documents, so metadata inside those is not what this removes.

  • EXIF is the camera own record: model, lens, exposure, the moment the shutter fired and, if location was on, coordinates.
  • XMP and IPTC are editing and publishing blocks. They can name a photographer, a client or a caption written years ago.
  • PNG files keep text chunks instead, which often hold the name of the software that wrote them.
  • The ICC color profile stays because dropping it changes how colors look, and it describes nothing personal.
