Which format should I pick?

JPG for pages that are mostly photographs, PNG for pages of text and line art where the edges should stay crisp.

What dpi do I need?

72 is enough on a screen. 288 suits print, or cropping into something afterwards, and makes much larger files.

Can I open a password-protected PDF?

No. Remove the password from the document first; encrypted files cannot be opened here.

Will the text still be searchable?

No. A drawn page is a picture, so the words in it are pixels. Keep the PDF as well if you need to search it.

What a drawn page is good for

Each page is drawn as its own picture. Choose JPG or PNG, one of four resolutions from 72 to 288 dpi, and a page range if you do not want all of them.

  • A slide, a document or a web page takes an image without asking anyone to open a reader.
  • Single pages can be cropped, marked up or resized in any photo editor once they are pictures.
  • A picture of a page cannot be edited back into text, which is sometimes exactly what you want.
  • Keep the original PDF alongside; searching and copying only work in that.
