Frequently asked questions

Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes, one format under two names. The shorter spelling comes from systems that allowed three-letter extensions, and it is what the files here are saved as.

When is PNG the better one to keep?

Whenever the picture has flat color, sharp text, line art or a transparent background. JPEG blurs hard edges and cannot hold transparency at all.

What happens to a transparent background?

It is filled with the background color the converter uses, because JPEG has no way to record transparency. Write WebP or PNG instead if that background has to stay clear.

Why is my PNG screenshot so large?

PNG records every pixel exactly, with no loss. That is what makes it right for text and diagrams, and heavy for anything with a photograph in it.

What you gain and what you give up

PNG keeps every pixel, which is why screenshots and exports come out heavy. Writing them as JPEG trades detail the eye misses for a much smaller file. Files are saved with the .jpg extension.

  • PNG is lossless: the file that comes out is the picture that went in, pixel for pixel, which is why the files are big.
  • JPEG throws away detail chosen to be hard to notice, and a photograph often lands under a fifth of its PNG size.
  • Hard edges are where the loss shows first, so a screenshot full of text holds up worse than a landscape does.
  • Once written as JPEG, the discarded detail is gone. Converting back to PNG makes a large file, not a restored one.
