Does it show where the photo was taken?

If the file records it, yes, in decimal degrees at the top of the result. If it records nothing, the page says so rather than guessing.

Is the photo uploaded to check it?

No. The file is opened in this browser tab and read here. Nothing about it, the coordinates included, is sent anywhere or looked up on a map.

Why is my file empty of tags?

Many apps strip them. A screenshot never had any, and an image saved back from a social platform usually returns with the whole block removed.

Can I get rid of what I see?

Yes, with the EXIF remover on this site. It writes a copy of the picture with the blocks taken out, also without uploading anything.

What the tags can give away

Drop one JPEG, PNG or TIFF. Whether a location is recorded is answered first, then every tag found is listed: camera and lens, shutter, aperture, ISO and the capture date.

  • Coordinates are only there if location was switched on when the shutter fired.
  • A serial number in the camera block links every photo taken with that body.
  • The orientation tag is why one app shows a photo upright and another shows it on its side.
  • Sharing a file can share the place it was taken, unless the platform strips it on the way through.
