Frequently asked questions
Can I crop to a square or 16:9?
Not from a preset. The box is freeform, so a fixed ratio has to be judged by eye. Resize Image is the page for hitting exact pixel numbers afterwards.
Can I crop a folder of pictures at once?
No. The box is drawn by hand on one picture, so each one is done on its own. Resize Image handles a whole folder with one setting.
Does cropping soften the picture?
The pixels you keep are the pixels you had, though saving re-encodes them. The file gets smaller because there is less of the picture left.
What about an animated GIF?
The first frame is cropped and saved as a still picture. The animation is not carried through.
What a crop is for
Drag a rectangle over the area you want, nudge its edges until the framing is right, and save. The crop is freeform, so there are no fixed ratios to pick from.
- Cutting the edges off moves the eye to the subject, which is often a bigger improvement than anything done to color.
- A crop is also how a picture is made to fit a shape it was never taken in: a square avatar, or a wide banner.
- Every crop throws pixels away, so a heavily cropped photo has less to work with if it is later needed at a large size.
- For an exact pixel size, crop for the framing first, then set the numbers on the Resize Image page.
