Frequently asked questions

Can I straighten a photo that is off by a few degrees?

No. The turns here are 90, 180 and 270 only. A small tilt needs an editor that rotates by a free angle and crops the corners that creates.

Why is my photo sideways in one app and upright in another?

The camera wrote an orientation tag instead of turning the pixels. Software that ignores the tag shows the picture as stored. Turning the pixels here settles it everywhere.

Can several photos take the same turn?

Yes. Add them together and the chosen angle is applied to all of them in one run.

Does turning cost any quality?

A quarter turn moves whole pixels around rather than resampling them. What the file loses depends on the encoder that writes the result.

Orientation tags and why they go wrong

Three quarter turns are on offer: 90 degrees clockwise, 180, or 270. Pick one and it is applied to every file you added. Free angles and straightening are not part of this panel.

  • A phone camera usually records the picture as the sensor saw it and adds a tag saying which way up it should be shown.
  • Software that reads the tag shows the photo correctly. Software that ignores it, or a step that strips the tag, leaves the photo on its side.
  • Turning the pixels themselves removes the argument, because there is nothing left for a program to misread.
  • Quarter turns are the safe ones: no pixel has to be invented and nothing gets cropped away.
