How to use JSON Formatter

  1. 1

    Paste your JSON

Put the JSON into the box. It is parsed in this tab and never sent anywhere.

  2. 2

    Beautify, minify or validate

Three buttons: indent it, strip it to one line, or check it. A parse error shows its position.

  3. 3

    Copy the output

One Copy all button takes the formatted or minified JSON from the panel underneath.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this work without uploading anything?

Yes. The tool processes your input inside the browser tab. Nothing is sent to a processing server or stored in an account.

Can I change the result before copying it?

Yes. Adjust any available control and the result updates. Copy it only when the output matches what you need.

Which browsers are supported?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari support the browser features used here. Very old browsers may lack a required API.

Background

What the parser will and will not accept

JSON has no comments, allows no trailing comma, and needs keys in double quotes. Those three are what hand-edited files trip on, and the error points at the character.

  • Minifying only drops whitespace outside strings, so the data is unchanged and parses exactly the same.
  • Key order is kept as you wrote it. JSON itself has no ordering rule, so a program reading it may not care.
