Frequently asked questions
Does this work without uploading anything?
Yes. The tool processes your input inside the browser tab. Nothing is sent to a processing server or stored in an account.
Can I change the result before copying it?
Yes. Adjust any available control and the result updates. Copy it only when the output matches what you need.
Which browsers are supported?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari support the browser features used here. Very old browsers may lack a required API.
What a hash can and cannot tell you
A hash proves two files are identical byte for byte. It cannot be turned back into the content, and one changed byte changes the whole digest.
- MD5 is fine for checking a download arrived intact. It is broken where someone might forge a matching file.
- Hashing a password like this is not storage. That needs a slow function with a salt, such as bcrypt or Argon2.
Full specification
| Input | Pasted text or one local file plus an algorithm. |
|---|---|
| Output | MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 or SHA-512 hexadecimal digest. |
| Method | crypto.subtle for SHA; local JavaScript MD5 for checksums only. |
| Text or file | The two inputs are exclusive: choosing a file clears the text box, and typing clears the chosen file. One digest at a time. |
| Algorithms | MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512. SHA-512 is in the picker even where the page heading lists only the first three. |
| Price | Free. Supported by clearly labeled ads outside the working area. |
| Where processing happens | In your browser tab. Your input is never uploaded. |
