Frequently asked questions

Can I make Chinese characters bold with Unicode?

No. Unicode has no bold, italic or script variant of any Han character, so no website can make one. Bold Chinese on screen is a font doing the work, and a font cannot travel through copy and paste. Decoration can.

Why did fullwidth change nothing?

Fullwidth applies to ASCII letters, digits and punctuation. Chinese characters already occupy a full width cell, so there is no separate fullwidth form for them to become.

How many Chinese characters can be circled?

53 have a circled form and 36 a bracketed form, 58 distinct between them. Five are Japanese shinjitai such as 労 and 医 with no encoded Traditional equivalent. Everything else passes through unchanged.

Will this work in Instagram or Threads?

Decoration and circled forms survive in bios and post text. Fullwidth is folded back to plain ASCII wherever a platform normalises input, which includes usernames and search. Test the field you intend to use.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The conversion is a character lookup running in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and it keeps working if your connection drops.

Background

Why there is no bold Chinese

Unicode encodes no bold, italic or script version of a Chinese character, so no tool can make one. Only 58 Han characters have a circled or bracketed form. Decoration around your text works with every character.

  • Unicode gives Latin letters thirteen mathematical alphabets and gives Han characters none. A scan of every code point returns no match.
  • Fullwidth conversion changes ASCII only. Han characters are already full width, so they come back as typed. That is not a fault.
  • Circled covers 53 Han characters and bracketed 36, 58 distinct. Five are Japanese shinjitai with no Traditional counterpart encoded.
