Frequently asked questions

What does a hex code actually contain?

Three pairs of hexadecimal digits: red, then green, then blue. RGB writes those same three channels in decimal, which is why the conversion is arithmetic rather than a lookup.

Do I get HSL and CMYK as well?

Yes. All four formats sit on the same panel. Edit any one of them and the other three follow, so the HEX field is only one way in.

Is my color sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in this browser tab. Nothing is sent to a processing server and nothing is stored in an account.

Which browsers work?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari have the browser features used here. A very old browser may lack a required API.

Background

Reading a hex code

Type or paste the code into the HEX field. The RGB numbers appear as you type, with HSL and CMYK on the same panel and a swatch showing the color.

  • Each pair of digits is one channel: red, then green, then blue.
  • The same color has one hex code and one RGB triple, so nothing is lost moving between them.
  • Copy the format the file you are editing expects, rather than converting it again later.
  • Check the swatch as well as the numbers, because one mistyped digit still gives a valid code.
