Frequently asked questions
Does it count spaces?
Both are shown. Some fields count spaces and some do not, so you can read whichever applies.
How are emoji counted?
By code point. A plain emoji is one, a flag is two, and a family emoji is five joined together — the Background section below spells this out.
What limits should I watch?
A meta description is about 155, an Instagram bio 150, an SMS 160, and an X post 280.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. It is counted in this tab as you type and never leaves your device.
What exactly counts as a space?
Whatever the browser calls whitespace: ordinary spaces, tabs, newlines, non-breaking and ideographic spaces. Zero-width spaces and soft hyphens are not whitespace, so they stay in the without-spaces figure.
Why a flag counts as two
Characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs and reading time, all updating live.
- Counting is by code point. A plain emoji is one, a flag is two, and a family emoji is five joined together.
- Platforms count their own way. An SMS drops from 160 characters to 70 the moment one non-Latin character appears.
