Frequently asked questions
How does the calculator handle shifts that cross midnight?
The calculator correctly processes time durations that span across midnight. For example, if you enter a start time of 10:00 PM and an end time of 6:00 AM, it will correctly calculate the duration as 8 hours.
What is the difference between total hours and decimal hours?
Total hours are displayed in a standard format, such as '8h 30m'. Decimal hours convert the minutes into a fraction of an hour, so '8h 30m' becomes '8.5'. The decimal format is especially useful for multiplying by an hourly pay rate.
Can I calculate the duration over several days?
This tool is designed for calculating durations that are within or slightly over a single 24-hour period. It does not take dates into account, so it is not suitable for calculating the time between, for example, Monday at 9:00 AM and Wednesday at 5:00 PM.
Does this calculator subtract lunch breaks?
No, this is a simple start-to-end duration calculator. It does not have a feature for deducting break times. Calculating net weekly hours with separate break deductions requires a weekly time-card calculator.
Can I add or subtract time values with this tool?
This specific tool is focused on calculating the duration between a start and end point. It does not currently support the direct addition or subtraction of time blocks, such as calculating the sum of 2h 15m and 1h 45m.
Understanding Time Formats
Enter two times to find the duration. The tool handles calculations that cross midnight and provides results in both hours/minutes and decimal formats.
- The hours and minutes format (e.g., 8h 30m) is useful for logging time and understanding the duration of an event.
- The decimal format (e.g., 8.5 hours) is needed for payroll. It makes it easy to multiply hours worked by an hourly rate.
