Frequently asked questions
Do my files get uploaded anywhere?
No. The files are opened by this browser tab, renamed, and packed into a ZIP on your own device. There is no server to send them to and no account to make.
Does this rename the files already on my computer?
It cannot. A web page has no way to rename a file on your disk. You get a ZIP of copies under the new names, and your originals are left exactly as they were.
Can I undo a rename?
Your originals are never touched, so there is nothing to undo — delete the ZIP and you are back where you started. Inside the ZIP, the names are final.
Does it work with Chinese, Japanese or emoji filenames?
Yes. Names are written into the ZIP as UTF-8, so han characters, kana and emoji all survive. The tidy-up switch strips emoji only if you turn it on.
Will it break my file extensions?
Not unless you ask. The part after the last dot is locked by default and copied through untouched. Unlocking it takes a tick, and the page says what that risks.
What happens if two files end up with the same name?
The row turns red before you download anything, and a number in brackets is added to the second one. Nothing is quietly overwritten, and you can change a rule instead.
How many files can I do at once?
There is no fixed limit. The ceiling is the memory your browser has, because every file is held there while the ZIP is built. On a phone, a few hundred is comfortable.
When batch renaming saves the most time
One rule, applied to every file you added. The table shows the old name and the new one side by side, and any clash turns red before you download.
- Photos off a camera arrive as IMG_4821. A prefix and a sequence turn a shoot into a set someone else can read.
- Files headed for a web server do better without spaces. Turning them into hyphens once beats editing forty names by hand.
- A date stamped at the front sorts a folder chronologically in every file manager, with nobody changing the sort order.
- Scanned documents named scan001 become readable once a find-and-replace swaps that word for the client and the year.
