How to use Car Loan Calculator
- 1
Enter what you are borrowing
The price after any deposit or trade-in, not the sticker price.
- 2
Add the rate and term
The annual interest rate as a percentage, the term in years, and any extra you pay each month.
- 3
Read the schedule
The table builds on the page: each payment, the interest in it, and the balance left.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include tax, registration or dealer fees?
No. It works on the figure you enter as the amount borrowed. Add any fees that are being financed into that figure yourself, and leave out anything you pay separately.
Can I see what paying extra each month does?
Yes. Enter a fixed extra amount and it is applied to every payment. The schedule ends when the balance clears, and both the payment count and the total interest fall.
Is it safe to type my loan details in?
The arithmetic runs in this tab. The amount, the rate and the term are never sent anywhere, and they are gone when you close or reload the page.
Why is the first payment mostly interest?
Interest is charged on the balance, and the balance starts at its highest. As the balance falls, the interest part of each payment falls with it.
I got a message saying the payment does not cover the interest.
Then the balance would grow every month and the schedule would never end. Raise the payment or lower the rate. The table also stops after the term plus 600 rows, so a runaway case cannot hang the page.
What the schedule shows on a car loan
Enter the amount you are borrowing, the annual rate and the term. The table shows every payment split into principal and interest, down to a zero balance.
- The monthly payment is fixed, but the split inside it moves: interest first, principal later.
- A shorter term raises the monthly payment and lowers the total interest; a longer term does the reverse.
- Print or save the table if you want to check a lender's figures line by line.
- Enter the balance after your deposit, or the payment will come out higher than the one you were quoted.
