Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to include the country code in the phone number?

Yes, including the full international country code (e.g., +1) is highly recommended. This ensures the QR code works correctly for users in any location, preventing messages from being sent to the wrong local number.

Will scanning the QR code send the SMS automatically?

No. For security, scanning the code opens the user's default messaging app with the number and message pre-filled. The user must manually press 'Send' to complete the action. This prevents messages from being sent without confirmation.

Does this work on all smartphones?

Supported scanners can interpret an SMS QR payload and pass it to a messaging application; confirm compatibility on the target devices. The user's default camera app is typically all that is needed.

Can I track who scans the QR code?

No, this tool creates a static QR code with no tracking technology. The interaction is private, between the person scanning and their own phone. The code does not report when it has been scanned.

What happens if I leave the message field blank?

The QR code will still work. Scanning it will open the user's SMS app with only the 'To:' field filled in. The message body will be blank, ready for the user to type their own message.

Can I put a logo in the middle of any of these codes?

Yes — the logo picker is on every generator mode, not only the logo pages. Size runs from 40 to 100 percent and error correction locks to H automatically so the covered modules stay readable.

How do I check the code I just made actually works?

Read it back here. The same site has a scanner that takes either a camera or an image file, so a code made with a logo or a heavy color can be verified before it goes to print.

Background

Use Cases for SMS QR Codes

The SMS QR Code Generator creates a QR code that prompts a phone to send a text message to a specified number. The generated code can be used where a recipient and optional draft SMS need to be supplied.

  • Use SMS QR codes on posters for event RSVPs, on packaging for customer support, or in advertisements for competition entries to initiate communication.
  • Pre-filling the message streamlines the process for users. For example, a code can pre-fill a specific product code or keyword you need to receive.
