How to use QR Code Scanner

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to scan QR codes with this tool?

Yes. The scanning and decoding process happens entirely within your web browser on your own computer or phone. The image data from your camera or file is never sent to our servers, so the contents of the QR code remain private to you.

Why is the tool asking for camera permission?

To scan a QR code in real time, the tool needs access to your device's camera. This is a standard browser security feature. Your camera feed is processed locally and is not recorded or transmitted.

Can this tool read barcodes other than QR codes?

No, this tool is designed specifically for decoding QR codes, which are the square, pixelated matrix codes. It cannot read traditional one-dimensional (1D) barcodes, such as the ones found on product packaging.

What happens if my QR code contains a link?

The tool displays the full URL as text. The decoded URL is displayed for you to inspect before deciding whether to open it. The tool does not automatically open links.

My QR code is not scanning. What can I do?

Ensure the QR code is not damaged. For live scanning, use good lighting and make sure the image is in focus. If scanning from a file, a higher-resolution image will give better results.

My photo of a code will not decode. Is it worth retrying?

It already has. The picture is read at full size, then at 1600, 1000, 640 and 400 pixels, and every one of those is tried again after a black-and-white hardening pass. Inverted codes are read too.

Can I read a QR code from an image on a computer?

Choose an image file, or drop it on the page. Decoding runs in the browser on your computer, so a camera is not required.
