Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the VAT in a gross price?

Choose already includes tax. At twenty percent the panel divides the gross by 1.2 to find the net, and the difference is the VAT.

Can I just take twenty percent off a gross price?

No. That gives a smaller figure than the real net amount, because the VAT was added to the net rather than to the gross.

Which VAT rate applies to me?

It depends on the country and often the goods. Reduced and zero rates exist alongside the standard one, so check before you file.

Is this the same as a sales tax calculation?

The arithmetic is identical. Only the name and the usual rates differ, so either direction works here.

Background

Net, VAT and gross

Most prices you are handed already include VAT, so the panel opens with both directions available. Enter the gross figure, choose already includes tax, and read the net.

  • Net is the price before VAT, gross is the price after it, and the VAT is the difference.
  • Dividing the gross by one plus the rate is the only way back to the net figure.
  • Invoices normally show all three, which is why the panel shows all three.
  • Rounding at each line rather than at the end can leave an invoice a penny out.
