Frequently asked questions
Which formats can this read and write?
It reads PNG, JPG, WebP, HEIC and HEIF, and writes PNG, JPG or WebP. SVG, PDF and animated files are not handled here.
What happens to a transparent PNG?
JPG has no transparency, so those areas are filled with the background color the converter uses. Choose WebP or PNG output when the transparency has to survive.
Which output should I pick?
WebP is the smallest of the three for photographs and every current browser reads it. JPG is the safer choice for older software. PNG keeps a lossless copy and any transparency.
Can I convert a JPG back into a PNG?
Yes, but the detail JPG discarded does not come back. A PNG made from a JPG is a lossless copy of a lossy picture, at a larger size.
What converting a picture actually changes
Add files, choose the format you want out, and set the quality when the output is JPG or WebP. PNG, JPG, WebP, HEIC and HEIF are all read; the output is PNG, JPG or WebP.
- A format decides how pixels are stored, not what they show. Converting rewrites the storage and, for JPG and WebP, drops detail while doing it.
- PNG holds every pixel exactly and supports transparency, which makes it right for logos, screenshots and line art.
- JPG and WebP throw away detail the eye is poor at noticing, which is why photographs come out far smaller in them.
- Converting the same picture back and forth between lossy formats loses a little each time, so keep one original to work from.
